Chicago – Attorney General Kwame Raoul today announced the former owner of a Rock Island County convenience store and gas station pleaded guilty to charges he defrauded the state of Illinois out of more than $134,144 in sales taxes.
Amin Hasan, 49, previously of Moline, Illinois, pleaded guilty on Thursday to one count of sales tax evasion, a Class 1 felony. Hasan was ordered to pay $134,144 in total restitution to the Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) and was sentenced to four years of probation and required to perform 200 hours of community service.
“Individuals who defraud the state for their own financial gain are taking resources away from the programs and services upon which Illinois families rely,” Raoul said. “I appreciate the continued partnership with the Illinois Department of Revenue as we work together to send the message that stealing from the people of Illinois will not be tolerated.”
The Attorney General’s office charged Hasan alleging that, while doing business as F&A Corp. of Moline, Hasan underreported over $1.9 million in sales between January 2013 and August 2018, defrauding the state out of $134,144 in sales tax revenue. Hasan knowingly recorded false sales figures into spreadsheets and documents and destroyed cash register tapes and handwritten daily sales sheets.
The case was investigated by the IDOR’s Criminal Investigations Division.
"This case highlights the vital importance of collaboration between state agencies, and through our close partnership with Attorney General Kwame Raoul’s office, we have ensured accountability for an individual who sought to undermine the integrity of our tax system," said Illinois Department of Revenue Director David Harris. "Sales tax evasion not only robs the state of critical revenue but also places an unfair burden on law-abiding taxpayers. The Illinois Department of Revenue remains resolute in its commitment to thoroughly investigate and prosecute these offenses, ensuring that anyone who attempts to defraud the system faces the full weight of the law."
Assistant Attorney General Kiran Gupta handled the case for Raoul’s Special Prosecutions Bureau.
