Title:   Bureau Chief – Criminal Prosecutions/Trials Assistance

The Bureau Chief of the Criminal Prosecutions/Trials Assistance Bureau shall provide day-to-day management of the Criminal Prosecutions/Trials Assistance Bureau. Prosecutors working in this Bureau investigate and prosecute a broad spectrum of criminal offenses throughout Illinois ranging from traffic offenses to first degree murder. The Bureau provides trials assistance to the 102 elected State’s Attorneys and serves as a Special Prosecutor when the elected State’s Attorney has a perceived conflict of interest. The Bureau Chief regularly interacts with elected officials, supervises and provides leadership to the Assistant Attorney’s General assigned to the Bureau, and participates in hiring, evaluating and promotion of staff. In addition, the Bureau Chief shall participate in policy and procedure decisions and work effectively with other Divisions and Bureaus within the Office of the Illinois Attorney General.

 

In addition to management of the Bureau, the Bureau Chief may handle a full complement of complex felony matters. This will include handling all phases of investigations, drafting search warrants, presenting cases to Grand Juries, conducting preliminary hearings, prosecuting criminal cases including but not limited to preparing and arguing pretrial motions, managing discovery, conducting jury and bench trials, and arguing post-trial motions and sentencing hearings. In addition, duties include conducting habeas corpus petition hearings in the U.S. District Court.

Because Assistant Attorneys General prosecute cases throughout the state, travel is required.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must be licensed in the State of Illinois at the time of application.  Preferred candidates will have a specialization or emphasis in working with crime victims, approximately eight (8) years prosecutorial experience, significant felony first chair jury trial experience handling complex criminal cases including first degree murder, knowledge of mental health issues, experience working with expert witnesses, strong legal writing, facilitation and negotiation experience and a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively are essential functions of this position.

 

Additional requirements include skills in analyzing, appraising and organizing facts, evidence and precedent and effective presentation of such materials orally and in writing; dealing effectively with unanticipated situations; establishing and maintaining effective working relations with court officials, public officials and the general public; observing and training new attorneys in the research and presentation of relevant case law. Attendance and the ability to maintain satisfactory working relationships with other employees and the general public are essential functions of this position.
