ATTORNEY GENERAL MADIGAN URGES FAMILIES TO USE THE
SEX OFFENDER REGISTRY TO HELP PLAN SAFE TRICK OR TREATING

Chicago — With Halloween just days away, Attorney General Lisa Madigan today urged Illinois families to take the time to go online to learn where sex offenders live in their neighborhoods, so they can avoid those homes as they plan safe trick-or-treat routes for their children.

Parents and families can go online to visit the Illinois Sex Offender Registry Web site at www.isp.state.il.us or call the Illinois Sex Offender Registry Team’s (ISORT) Hotline at 1-888-41-ISORT (1-888-414-7678). The Sex Offender Registry Web site is administered by the Illinois State Police.

Checking the Sex Offender Registry will bring parents up to date on sex offenders who may be living nearby,” said Madigan. “I encourage parents, grandparents and other caregivers to use this resource at Halloween and all through the year.”

A total of 24,638 sex offenders are listed on the Illinois Sex Offender Registry, of which 20,005, or 81 percent, committed a crime against a child.

“Parents know to check their children’s candy to keep them safe at Halloween. They should be just as vigilant before their kids head out for trick or treating by checking the Sex Offender Registry or calling our hotline,” Madigan said.
