Do Not Call Registry

DO NOT CALL REGISTRY

Consumers scored a major legal victory on Tuesday, October 7, 2003 as a federal appeals court in Denver ruled that the Do Not Call Registry may take effect immediately, while litigation concerning the constitutionality of the Registry continues. Based on this ruling, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and other federal and state agencies are bringing the Do Not Call Registry back online according to the following schedule:

Starting Thursday, October 9, 2003 at 7:00 a.m., consumers who have not already put their telephone numbers on the Do Not Call Registry may do so by going to www.donotcall.gov or by calling 1-888-382-1222 (TTY 1-866-290-4236).

Starting Friday, October 10, 2003 at 7:00 a.m., telemarketers may access the Do Not Call Registry at www.telemarketing.donotcall.gov. Telemarketers who disregard the rules of the Registry may be fined up to $11,000 per call.

Starting Saturday, October 11, 2003 at 5:00 p.m., consumers can file Do Not Call complaints with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) by going to www.donotcall.gov or by calling 1-888-382-1222 (TTY 1-866-290-4236). If you put your number on the registry before August 31, 2003 you can file a complaint about any telemarketing call received after October 1, 2003. To file a do not call complaint, you must know the date of the call and either the name or the phone number of the company that called. Consumers who put numbers on the registry after September 1, 2003, must wait three months before filing a complaint.
