Sexual Assault in Chicago
General Statistics
In 2002 there were 1,971 reported incidents of criminal sexual assault in the city of Chicago, up 2% from 2001. (Chicago Police Department Index Crime in Chicago 2002)
1,526 sexual assaults have been reported in Chicago through October 2003. (Chicago Police Department 2003)
Considering that law enforcement estimates that only 3 out of 10 sexual assaults are reported, an estimated 5,000 sexual assaults have actually occurred this year in Chicago. (Chicago Police Department 2003)
Together, rape victims’ advocates and the Chicago YWCA have helped 3,300 survivors of sexual assault in 2003.
