Safeguarding Children

Internet Safety:
Project Surf Safe Fact Sheet
Navigating the Hidden Dangers of the Internet

What is Surf Safe?
Surf Safe is a program created by the Office of the Attorney General to provide parents with valuable information regarding the realities of online safety. It is also designed to give parents additional tools to ensure that our children are surfing the Internet safely.

What if I already know about the dangers of the Internet?
Although there are many common sense tips out there to help us keep our children safe, the Internet is an unmonitored, anonymous space where people can portray themselves falsely to manipulate others. We often give out valuable information on the Internet even when we think we are being extremely cautious. Therefore, it is always helpful to continue learning about what’s out there in order to stay one step ahead of our kids.

What can I tell my kids about staying out of danger on the Internet?
The most important thing to teach your children is to not give out any personal information on the Internet. Kids might think they don’t give out any personal information because they don’t tell anyone their full name, address, or age, but often they unknowingly include information that can be very revealing to a sex predator. This information could be their interests, name of a brother or sister, or naming specific places near their home or school.

By setting a few guidelines with your children, you can prevent them from many of the dangers found on the Internet.
