Public Access Counselor

The Public Access and Opinions Division is seeking candidates for the position of Public Access Counselor to lead the office’s Public Access team of attorneys and staff.

The Public Access Counselor: (1) analyzes and responds to questions and concerns from the public, members of the media and government officials relating to the interpretation of the state Freedom of Information Act and Open Meetings Act, (2) conducts outreach and training sessions on the open government laws, and (3) works to develop policy, legal and legislative initiatives to strengthen the state’s open government laws and ensure compliance with these important statutes. Candidates must possess excellent legal research, writing and oral presentation skills. Candidates also must demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively with members of the public, government officials and members of the media. Experience in journalism or experience in working with local or state government bodies is preferred. Experience with the state legislative process is a plus. Candidates must be licensed to practice law in Illinois at the time of application. The ideal candidate will have five or more years of experience in law, journalism or government service in a position involving familiarity with the open government laws.

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
