Summary of Duties and Responsibilities: The Criminal Appeals Division of the Office of the Illinois Attorney General seeks candidates for the position of Assistant Attorney General. The bulk of the division’s practice is in the federal courts in Illinois. Assistants in the division respond to petitions for writs of habeas corpus in the United States District Courts and brief and argue habeas corpus appeals before the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. Assistants also brief and argue criminal cases in the Illinois Supreme and Appellate Courts. Recent cases handled by the division include: People v. Howard, No. 104553, 2008 WL 1746673 (Ill. Apr. 17, 2008); In re Rolandis G., 99581 (Ill. Argued Mar. 11, 2008); Calloway v. Montgomery, 512 F.3d 940 (7th Cir. 2008); Sturgeon v. Chandler, 06-3934 (7th Cir. Argued Jan. 9, 2008); and Illinois v. Caballes, 543 U.S. 405 (2005).

Candidates must be licensed in Illinois. Newly licensed attorneys will not be considered. The ideal candidate will have at least two years of experience as a judicial clerk, appellate court research staff member or litigation associate in a law firm. A background in federal habeas corpus and criminal appeals is preferred. Candidates must enjoy research and writing.

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience, the salary range is $50,500 to $67,500.
